How to calculate BMR? If you wish to calculate BMR yourself, below are the BMR formulas for both English units and metric units. This formula is called the Harris-Benedict equation and was first published in 1919.

Metric Units
Male: BMR = 66.4730 + 13.7516 x Weight (kg) + 5.0033 x Height (cm) - 6.7550 x Age (year)
Female: BMR = 655.0955 + 9.5634 x Weight (kg) + 1.8496 x Height (cm) - 4.6756 x Age (year)

English Units
Male: BMR = 66.4730 + 6.2377 x Weight (lb) + 12.7084 x Height (in) - 6.7550 x Age (year)
Female: BMR = 655.0955 + 4.3379 x Weight (lb) + 4.6980 x Height (in) - 4.6756 x Age (year)


Examples 1: A 40-year-old man who is 170 cm and weights 60 kg has a BMR of

BMR Calculation = 66.4730 + 13.7516 x 60 + 5.0033 x 170 - 6.7550 x 40 = 1,472 Calories


Example 2: A 35-year-old woman who is 5'5" and weights 130 pounds has a BMR of

BMR Calculation = 655.0955 + 4.3379 x 130 + 4.6980 x (5 x 12 + 5) - 4.6756 x 35 = 1,361 Calories
